500 Gram Panchayats in Nagpur(Maharsashtra) will be Wifi-ed on this Independence day

500 gram panchayats in Nagpur district in Maharashtra will be digitally connected on Independence day.

The solar-powered Wi-Fi hotspots, with a range of 200 ft, will allow internet connectivity to the panchayat office school and health centre, which are in the vicinity. Initially free, the connectivity will cost the state exchequer Rs 10 crore for a year.

"It will benefit two lakh villagers," said V K Gautam, principal secretary, Information Technology. A pilot project was conducted in five villages in Nagpur district since May. And since the service is unlimited, nearly every villager has been downloading 15GB data on their smartphones, said Gautam.

TelecomBuzz take: It is good step that government identified the wifi connectivity as important tool to promote Digital India . But the key concern are
  • Recurring cost of maintenance of the deployed network and solar system
  • which operator will deploy these wifi network? If it is BSNL then the network deployment will be more as formality as we can't expect good quality service from BSNL.
  • Why private operators are not targeting wifi expansions..because of bad business case like Mobile services in Rural India?
